Physiotherapy Treatment Of Stress Fractures Of The Foot

Does your foot hurt when running?
Metatarsal stress fractures are a very common overuse injury in active young people related to running on hard surfaces. The neck of the second metatarsal is usually the site of the stress fracture, causing an aching pain aggravated by activity with tenderness over the site on palpation. The diagnosis is confirmed by MRI/CT scan or x-ray.
How is STRESS FRACTURE OF THE FOOT treated by Physiotherapists?
The physiotherapy management consists of 6 weeks of rest from running and weight bearing in an aircast boot prescribed by the physiotherapist. The patient should cross-train and can resume full weight bearing usually within 8 weeks, slowly returning to pre-injury training.
